How to create a data model in PowerBI with multiple tables from a single Excel file

One of the issues I have noticed coming up with learners after PowerBI training is that when they go back to their desks, they find that what they have to deal with is a SINGLE file so one of the first jobs they have to do is create what is called a star schema (tables with unique data in it) from this file. This case study shows you how to do this.  You can download the starting Excel  file here.  This tutorial is just about getting you to the starting point.

Step One – separating out the data into separate tables

Step Two – Creating the Calendar table.

I have used the recipes created by Ken Puls here. You can purchase the recipes here (it is a paid course but worth every single penny and more). I am using recipe 60.100.1809 and 60.105.1809

Step Three – changing the PowerBI Data source

You can download the PowerBI completed file here. Note that because I will be using a different path so one of the first things you will have to do is change the data source location in the PowerBI file.

This video shows you how to do this.
